Raised beds are recommended so universally that the reasons get lost. They are not simply a tidier way to garden — they change drainage, soil temperature, root depth and how much water you must supply. Understanding that changes how you build one.
What a raised bed actually fixes
- Compaction. You never walk on the soil, so it stays porous and roots move freely.
- Drainage. Water leaves faster, which rescues heavy clay sites and punishes you in July if the bed is shallow.
- Soil control. You build the growing medium instead of amending whatever the builder left behind.
- Warming. The soil warms two to three weeks earlier in spring, which is a real head start in northern zones.
- Access. A bed at 24 in. or higher is genuinely reachable from a stool or a wheelchair.
What it does not fix: sun. Four hours of afternoon light is four hours of afternoon light whether it falls on the ground or on a beautiful cedar box.
Choosing the material

If budget is the constraint
Two beds in untreated fir beat one bed in cedar. Growing area in year one matters more than the frame lasting to year twelve, and by the time the fir softens you will know exactly what size and placement you actually want.
Sizing: width, length and depth
Width — 4 ft, and only 4 ft
Reach decides width. Most adults can comfortably work about 24 in. into a bed, so a bed accessible from both sides tops out near 48 in. Against a fence, halve it to 24–30 in. A bed you must step into has lost its main advantage on day one.
Length — whatever your material comes in
8 ft and 12 ft are common because lumber is sold that way. Beyond about 12 ft, walking around becomes tedious and long sides start to bow outward under wet soil; add a cross-tie at the midpoint if you go longer.
Depth — the number people get wrong

If the bed sits on soil rather than on paving, roots can travel below the frame, so 12 in. of frame over decent ground behaves like more. On a patio, take the depth figures literally.
Building the frame
Level the site, don't level the bed
Skim high spots rather than packing low ones. Settled fill sinks; undisturbed ground does not.
Kill the grass, keep the soil life
A layer of plain cardboard, overlapped by 6 in. and watered through, smothers turf in a season and lets worms move up into the new soil. Plastic sheeting does the opposite.
Fasten with structural screws
Exterior-rated star-drive screws, 3 in., two per joint minimum. Pre-drill cedar near the ends to prevent splitting.
Add corner posts for anything over 12 in. tall
A 2×4 inside each corner, plus one at the midpoint of long sides, resists the outward push of wet soil. This is the step people skip and regret.
Add hardware cloth if you have voles or gophers
½ in. galvanised mesh stapled across the bottom before filling. Retrofitting it is a full excavation.
Filling it without overspending
A 4 × 8 ft bed at 12 in. deep needs about 32 cubic feet — roughly 1.2 cubic yards — of material. In bagged compost at 1.5 cu ft per bag, that is more than twenty bags, and it will cost several times what bulk delivery costs. Two ways to cut it down:
- Buy bulk. Anything above about half a cubic yard is cheaper delivered loose. Order by cubic yard: length × width × depth in feet, divided by 27.
- Fill the bottom third with coarse organic matter in deep beds — small logs, branches, autumn leaves, cardboard. It decomposes into the soil profile over two or three years. Do not use this trick in a bed shallower than about 18 in.; you will simply lose root depth.
Cost snapshot
A 4×8 ft cedar bed at 12 in. deep typically runs $110–$180 in lumber and fasteners. The same bed in untreated fir is roughly $45–$70. Bulk soil to fill it costs about $45–$90 delivered, against $150+ for the equivalent in bags.
The soil mix
The widely repeated "one third compost, one third peat, one third vermiculite" recipe grows a spectacular first season and then collapses, because it contains no mineral soil to hold structure and nutrients. A more durable blend:
- 50% quality screened topsoil — the mineral backbone.
- 30% finished compost — nutrition and biology. Mixed sources beat one source.
- 20% aeration material — coarse bark fines, pumice or coarse sand.
Then top-dress with 1–2 in. of compost every spring rather than rebuilding. Test pH once in the first year; most vegetables want 6.0–7.0, and a state extension soil test costs very little and tells you far more than a hardware-store probe.
First-season care
Raised beds drain fast, which means they dry fast. Expect to water more often than an in-ground bed — daily in a heat wave for a shallow bed. Drip line or soaker hose on a timer pays for itself in one July. Mulch 2 in. deep with straw or shredded leaves once plants are established; it cuts evaporation dramatically and keeps soil temperature stable.

How deep does a raised bed need to be?
Ten to twelve inches suits most vegetables. Go to eighteen or twenty-four inches for carrots, parsnips, potatoes and perennials, or if the bed sits on paving rather than on soil.
Is pressure-treated lumber safe for a vegetable bed?
Residential pressure-treated lumber sold since 2003 uses copper-based preservatives rather than arsenic, and is generally considered acceptable for edible beds. If you would rather not, line the inside faces with heavy plastic sheeting, leaving the base open.
Do I need to remove the grass first?
Not by digging. Lay plain cardboard over the turf, overlap the seams and soak it before filling. The grass dies, the cardboard breaks down, and soil life moves upward into your new bed.
How much soil do I need for a 4x8 bed?
About 32 cubic feet — roughly 1.2 cubic yards — at twelve inches deep. Buying that in bulk rather than in bags usually costs less than half as much.
