Almost every cordless drill sold today will hang a curtain rod. The difference between a good buy and a drawer ornament shows up in year three — and it is almost never decided by the number printed largest on the box.

The number on the box is marketing. Here is what voltage, torque, chuck size and amp-hours really tell you, and the three questions that decide the purchase.

A cordless drill is usually the first real power tool someone owns, and it is the tool people most often replace within two years — not because it broke, but because they bought a bare number instead of a system. Below is the full spec sheet, translated, in the order the decisions actually matter.

The short version

Pick a battery platform you can live with for a decade, buy a brushless 18V/20V MAX drill/driver with a ½ in. keyless chuck and at least 450 in-lbs of torque, and spend the leftover money on a second battery and a decent bit set. That covers roughly 95% of household work.

Buy the battery platform, not the drill

Every major manufacturer runs a closed battery ecosystem. The pack that came with your drill will also run that brand's impact driver, circular saw, string trimmer, shop light and inflator — and it will run nothing at all from a competitor. Ten years into ownership, the drill is the cheapest thing you own in that system; the four or five batteries are the investment.

So the first question is not "which drill", it is "which family of tools will I keep adding to?" Ask three things before you commit:

  • Does the platform cover outdoor power equipment? If you expect to buy a cordless mower, trimmer or blower later, choose a brand whose higher-voltage outdoor line shares batteries with its drills, or at least offers an adapter.
  • Are bare tools widely sold? A healthy platform sells most tools "tool only". If everything comes bundled with batteries you do not need, you will overpay repeatedly.
  • Can you buy a replacement pack locally on a Saturday? Obscure platforms are cheap up front and painful later.

Voltage: 18V and 20V MAX are the same thing

This is the single most misunderstood number in the category. A standard pack is built from five lithium-ion cells in series. Each cell rests at about 3.6 V nominal and peaks at roughly 4.0 V with no load. Five cells therefore give you 18 V nominal and 20 V maximum. Both figures describe one identical battery. One brand prints the nominal number, another prints the peak, and neither drill is more powerful for it.

A 12V drill is genuinely pleasant for interior work and far kinder to your wrist over a long assembly session. But if you own exactly one drill, make it 18V/20V MAX — the runtime, torque and accessory range are all wider.

Torque, chuck and clutch

Torque

Torque is rotational force, listed in inch-pounds (in-lbs) or newton-metres (Nm); 1 Nm ≈ 8.85 in-lbs. Manufacturers quote maximum torque at the point of stall, which you will almost never reach in normal use, so treat it as a rough class indicator rather than a promise:

  • Under 300 in-lbs (≈34 Nm) — light assembly, hollow-wall anchors, pilot holes.
  • 450–650 in-lbs (≈50–73 Nm) — the sweet spot. Drives 3 in. structural screws, runs a 2 in. hole saw through a stud.
  • Above 750 in-lbs (≈85 Nm) — auger bits, self-feed bits, mixing paddles. Fit the side handle; this is enough torque to sprain a wrist when a bit binds.

Chuck

The chuck is the jaw that grips the bit. A ½ in. keyless chuck accepts every common bit shank and is the standard on full-size drills; ⅜ in. chucks appear on compact and 12V models and will refuse larger spade and hole-saw arbors. Single-sleeve chucks can be tightened with one hand, which matters more than the spec sheet suggests when you are on a ladder.

Clutch

The numbered collar behind the chuck is the clutch. It slips at a set torque so the screw stops turning before the head strips or the driver cams out and scars your work. Higher numbers equal more torque; the drill icon at the end disables the clutch entirely for drilling.

Common mistake

Leaving the collar on the drill symbol for every job. Driving screws with the clutch defeated is how cabinet hinges get stripped and trim gets split. Start around 8–10, run one test screw in scrap, and adjust.

Brushed vs brushless motors

A brushed motor uses carbon blocks pressing on a spinning commutator to switch current. They wear, they shed dust, and they waste energy as heat and friction. A brushless motor switches electronically instead. In practical terms, on the same battery, a brushless drill typically delivers noticeably longer runtime per charge, runs cooler under sustained load, and has one fewer wear part to replace.

Brushed tools still make sense in one situation: a low-use household drill bought as cheaply as possible. For anything you expect to use monthly, brushless is now the sensible default — the price gap has narrowed to a fraction of what it was five years ago.

If a drill is going to live in a truck or a garage for ten years, brushless is not a luxury feature. It is the part that decides whether year eight looks like year one.

The two-tool combo kit — drill/driver plus impact driver — is the single best value in the category and usually costs barely more than the drill alone. The impact driver takes over every long fastener and the drill keeps its chuck free for bits, which means you stop swapping accessories every ninety seconds. Amp-hours, charging and battery care

Voltage is pressure; amp-hours (Ah) are the size of the tank. A 5.0Ah pack holds roughly two and a half times the energy of a 2.0Ah pack of the same voltage, weighs about twice as much, and takes correspondingly longer to charge. Neither is "better":

  • 2.0Ah compact — overhead work, cabinet installs, anything you hold at shoulder height for an hour.
  • 4.0–5.0Ah — the general-purpose default. One pack usually covers a full afternoon of mixed drilling and driving.
  • 8.0Ah+ — high-drain tools such as circular saws and grinders. Overkill and unpleasantly nose-heavy on a drill.
  1. Store at partial charge

    Lithium packs age fastest sitting at 100% in heat. If a battery will be idle for months, leave it at roughly half charge.

  2. Keep them out of the truck bed in July and January

    Sustained heat permanently reduces capacity, and most chargers refuse to charge a pack below freezing until it warms.

  3. Let a hot pack rest before charging

    Charging straight after a hard cut is the quickest way to shorten a pack's life. Ten minutes on the bench is enough.

  4. Rotate your packs

    Two batteries used alternately outlast one battery cycled twice as often, and you never stand around waiting on a charger.

Choosing in ten minutes

  1. Pick the platform. Which brand's batteries do you — or the family member who lends you tools — already own?
  2. Pick the class. 18V/20V MAX unless you know your work is exclusively light interior assembly.
  3. Filter to brushless with a ½ in. chuck and 450 in-lbs or more.
  4. Compare kits, not tools. Two batteries and a real charger beat a marginally better drill with one battery and a trickle charger every time.
  5. Hold it. Balance, grip circumference and trigger feel differ enormously between brands, and no spec sheet captures any of it.

Budget snapshot

A brushless drill/driver kit with two mid-size batteries and a charger typically lands in the $130–$220 range. Adding the matching impact driver as part of a combo kit usually costs $30–$60 more than the drill kit alone — the best marginal dollar in the whole category.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 20V MAX drill more powerful than an 18V drill?

No. They describe the same five-cell lithium-ion battery — 18V is the nominal resting voltage and 20V is the peak no-load voltage. Compare torque, motor type and battery capacity instead.

Do I really need an impact driver as well as a drill?

Not for hanging shelves. But if you are driving dozens of long screws — decking, framing, fence pickets — an impact driver roughly halves the effort and almost eliminates cam-out, and it costs very little as part of a combo kit.

Can I use a hammer drill on concrete?

For small anchors in block or brick, yes. For poured concrete, or holes over about half an inch, a rotary hammer with an SDS-Plus chuck will do in seconds what a hammer drill does in minutes.

How long should a cordless drill battery last?

Three to five years of regular household use is typical, and longer if the pack is stored at moderate charge and away from temperature extremes. Capacity fades gradually rather than failing suddenly.
