An appliance has two prices. One is on the ticket, and the other is spread across the next twelve years of electricity bills — and the second one is frequently larger.

The yellow label uses a national average rate that almost certainly is not yours. Here is the two-minute calculation that turns it into a real number.

The yellow EnergyGuide label on major appliances in the United States is required by the Federal Trade Commission, and it is the only piece of comparative information on the showroom floor that is standardised across brands. It is also routinely misread.

Reading the EnergyGuide label

Four pieces of information matter:

  • Estimated yearly energy use, in kWh. This is the number to compare between models. It comes from a standardised test procedure, so it is genuinely comparable — it is not the manufacturer's own estimate.
  • Estimated yearly operating cost, in dollars. Calculated at a national average electricity rate that is fixed for the label's print run. Useful only for ranking models.
  • The comparison range bar, showing where this model sits against similar models in the same size and feature class. A large refrigerator will not be compared against a small one.
  • The ENERGY STAR mark, if present.

The dollar figure is not your dollar figure

Residential electricity prices vary by a factor of three or more across the United States. If your utility charges well above or below the label's assumed national average, the printed cost is off by the same proportion. Always redo the calculation with your own rate.

Converting kWh into your money

Find your rate on your electricity bill — the total bill divided by kWh used gives your true all-in rate, including delivery charges, which is usually higher than the headline energy rate.

The calculation

Annual cost = label kWh × your all-in rate per kWh

A refrigerator rated 550 kWh/year at $0.16/kWh costs about $88 a year. The same fridge at $0.32/kWh — normal in several states — costs about $176. Over a twelve-year service life, that is roughly $1,050 versus $2,110.

For gas appliances the label shows therms rather than kWh; the same arithmetic applies with your gas rate per therm.

ENERGY STAR and what it means

ENERGY STAR is a US Environmental Protection Agency programme that certifies products meeting efficiency criteria set above the federal minimum standard for that category. The criteria are category-specific and are periodically tightened, which is why an old certified model may be less efficient than a current uncertified one.

Two practical implications:

  • Compare the actual kWh figures, not just the presence of the logo. Two certified models can differ substantially.
  • Check for utility rebates. Many electricity and gas utilities offer instant or mail-in rebates on certified appliances, and some states run additional programmes. These frequently change the value calculation more than the efficiency itself does.

The pattern is consistent: the appliances worth paying for are the ones that run continuously or heat water. Anything you switch on for an hour a week is decided by features and reliability, not by the label.

Working out payback

  1. Take the kWh difference

    Model A at 550 kWh, Model B at 420 kWh — a difference of 130 kWh a year.

  2. Multiply by your rate

    At $0.20/kWh, that is $26 a year saved.

  3. Subtract any rebate from the price gap

    If Model B costs $300 more but attracts a $75 utility rebate, the real gap is $225.

  4. Divide

    $225 ÷ $26 ≈ 8.7 years. On a fridge with a 12–15 year life, that is a marginal case. On a water heater, the same exercise usually pays back in two or three.

  5. Then weigh the non-energy factors

    Noise, warranty, parts availability and how the thing is actually built will matter more to you over a decade than $26 a year.

Habits that beat specifications

  • Give the condenser room to breathe. A refrigerator crammed into a tight alcove with dusty coils runs far longer than its rating. Vacuum the coils twice a year and respect the clearances in the manual — the same clearances discussed in our delivery and installation guide.
  • Do not put a fridge or freezer in an unconditioned garage in a hot climate unless it is rated for it. Ambient temperature drives consumption directly.
  • Wash cold. The overwhelming majority of a washing machine's energy goes to heating water, not to turning the drum.
  • Clean the dryer's lint filter every load and the vent duct annually. Restricted airflow lengthens every cycle and is also a genuine fire risk.
  • Use the dishwasher's eco cycle. It is longer but uses less hot water, which is where the cost sits.
  • Lower the water heater to 120°F. Safer, and it cuts standby losses measurably.

Frequently asked questions

Is the yearly cost on the EnergyGuide label accurate?

It is accurate as a comparison between models, but the dollar figure uses a fixed national average electricity rate. Multiply the kWh figure by your own all-in rate — total bill divided by kWh used — for a number that reflects what you will actually pay.

Is ENERGY STAR worth paying extra for?

It depends on the category. For refrigerators, freezers, electric dryers and water heaters — things that run constantly or heat water — usually yes, especially with a utility rebate. For ovens and occasional-use appliances, the savings are small.

Which home appliance uses the most electricity?

In most homes with electric hot water, the water heater, at roughly 2,500-4,500 kWh a year. Where water heating is gas, the refrigerator and electric clothes dryer usually top the list.

Does a fridge in the garage use more energy?

Considerably, in a hot climate. Compressors work against ambient temperature, and many models are not rated for the extremes an uninsulated garage reaches. Look for a unit specifically rated for garage use.
