Watts told us how much energy a bulb consumed, and for a century that happened to correlate with brightness. LEDs broke that link permanently. The three numbers that matter now are lumens, Kelvin and CRI — and once you can read them, lighting stops being guesswork.
The three layers
- Ambient — the general fill that lets you move around safely. Ceiling fixtures, recessed cans, wall-washing, bounced light.
- Task — concentrated light exactly where work happens. Under-cabinet strips, a reading lamp beside a chair, a pendant over a worktop, vanity lights beside a mirror.
- Accent — the layer that makes a room look designed. Picture lights, shelf lighting, a lamp in a corner, uplighting behind a plant.
A room with only ambient light is flat and institutional. A room with only task light is patchy and tiring. The rule of thumb professionals use: at least three light sources at different heights in every room you sit in — ceiling, mid-level, table height.
Lumens: how much light a room needs
Lumens measure total light output. To size a room, multiply floor area by a target foot-candle level for the activity:

Spread that total across several fixtures rather than concentrating it in one. Four 800-lumen sources at different heights will always look better than one 3,200-lumen ceiling fixture, and they let you turn layers off independently.
Old watt equivalents
Roughly: 40 W ≈ 450 lm, 60 W ≈ 800 lm, 75 W ≈ 1,100 lm, 100 W ≈ 1,600 lm. Useful for translating a habit, useless for planning a room.
Kelvin: warm, neutral or cool

The critical rule is consistency. Mixing 2700K and 4000K sources in the same sightline reads as "something is wrong here" even to people who cannot say what. Pick one temperature per open space and hold it — including inside cabinet lighting, which is where mismatches usually creep in.
Warmer light in the evening is also easier on sleep. If you install tunable fixtures, set them to drift toward 2700K after dark rather than leaving them at daylight all day.
CRI: why your paint looks wrong
The colour rendering index scores how faithfully a light source shows colour compared with natural light, on a scale to 100. Cheap LEDs often sit at CRI 80, which renders reds and skin tones poorly — which is why a sample of paint can look correct in the store and muddy at home.
- CRI 80–84 — acceptable for garages, closets and utility spaces.
- CRI 90+ — the standard to insist on anywhere you look at food, fabric, artwork or faces. Kitchens, bathrooms, dressing areas, living rooms.
- CRI 95+ / high R9 — for makeup mirrors, art walls and anywhere red saturation matters. R9 is the deep-red sub-score that a general CRI figure can hide.
Room-by-room recipes
Kitchen
Ambient: ceiling or recessed at 3000K, CRI 90+. Task: under-cabinet strips — the highest-value lighting upgrade in any house, because standing at a worktop puts your body between the ceiling light and the chopping board. Accent: pendants over an island, or lighting inside glass-front cabinets.
Living room
Ambient: dimmable ceiling fixture or, better, several wall and table sources. Task: a floor lamp beside each seating position, shade bottom roughly at eye level when seated. Accent: an uplight in a corner and a picture light. Everything at 2700K.
Bathroom
Vanity lighting belongs beside the mirror at roughly 60–66 in. from the floor, not above it — overhead light casts shadows straight down into the eye sockets. 3000K, CRI 90+, and a separate ceiling fixture or shower light for ambient fill.
Bedroom
2700K throughout, everything dimmable. Wall-mounted reading lights free the nightstand and put light where the page is. Avoid a single bright ceiling fixture as the only source.
Window treatments belong to this system too — daylight is your largest ambient source, and a correctly chosen blind is effectively a dimmer for it.
Dimming without flicker
Most LED flicker and buzz comes from a mismatch between the driver and an old dimmer designed for incandescent loads. Three checks:
- Buy bulbs explicitly marked dimmable. Non-dimmable LEDs on a dimmer will flicker, buzz or fail.
- Use a modern LED-rated dimmer — usually described as ELV, or trailing-edge — rather than the leftover rotary unit in the wall.
- Respect the dimmer's minimum load. Replacing three 60 W bulbs with three 9 W LEDs can drop the circuit below the dimmer's minimum, which produces exactly the flicker people blame on the bulbs.
Six lighting mistakes
- One central ceiling fixture as the only source in a room.
- Mixing colour temperatures within one sightline.
- Recessed cans placed in a symmetrical grid rather than aimed at what matters.
- Vanity lights above the mirror instead of flanking it.
- Ignoring CRI, then repainting a room twice.
- No dimming anywhere — a room needs different light at 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.
